Donohoo Estate

The Donohoo’s, with their growing family, wanted to create an outdoor living space with multiple aspects including garden boxes, kids play area, lawn space, and entertaining space. In a previous home they did their landscaping project without an experienced professional. In this ‘forever home’, the back yard was relatively small and had a large slope from east to west, making it difficult to make room for all of the aspects they wanted, while keeping the outdoor living space private, open, and low-maintenance.

We heard their needs and designed a tiered outdoor living space that created three ‘rooms.’

To take care of the sloped backyard, we created a boulder retaining wall over 50 feet long that curved around one fence line. This created an upper area that was flat for the in-ground trampoline. In the lower area we created the gas fire pit with a sitting wall with several large 2’ to 4’ boulders to help retain the dirt on the slope. In the southernmost part of the yard we placed the shed pad and garden boxes (for maximum sun!).

"They worked with me through the whole process and now we have a backyard we can enjoy forever. They went above and beyond to make it just how we wanted. I would recommend them to anyone."

“A highlight for me was seeing the boulder wall complete with the rock stair steps. It really made the backyard usable and we could see the vision.”

The Results

For the garden area we used three 4’ x 8’ all-cedar garden boxes from a local supplier. For the entertaining area we laid approximately 1,500 square feet of premium Kentucky BlueGrass sod from Utah Valley Turf. Near the center of the sloped backyard we build an approximately 12’ round gas fire pit with a sitting wall. We used Belgard products including Catalina Grana in Rio for the patio, Shelton Wall in Victorian for the sitting wall, and Mega LaFitt for the cap of the sitting wall. Our excavation team dug in the upper tier an in-ground trampoline and placed 3’-wide chiseled stones from Browns Canyon to provide access from the lower level to the upper level. To keep the yard relatively maintenance-free, we placed professional grade fabric on top of all of the planter beds and laid 1 ½” tan cobblerock on top. The cherry on top was the installation of premium outdoor lights for step lights, path lights, and up lights on trees using the latest technology from FX Luminaire.
